Shooting: China and Finland Win 2 Quotas Each at 3rd Shotgun World Cup

China and Finland were able to win 2 quotas each at the third shotgun world cup held in Larnaca, Cyprus from April 24th to May 4th 2015. Like with the previous world cup events two quotas for each of the five shotgun events are available to athletes who have yet to qualify in any event and if their nations have not qualified two quotas in that particular event.

The women’s skeet was won by Italy’s Diana Bacosi whom defeated China’s Yu Xiumin 15-13. However since Italy has already qualified two athletes the second quota went to fourth place Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit of Thailand as the third place nation United States (Morgan Craft) had also previously qualified two athletes in this event.

In the men’s skeet United Arab Emirates’ Saif Bin Fittais performed the rare feat of winning three shootouts as he required one to qualify to the semifinals, to qualify to the finals and to win the overall event. He defeated Sweden’s Marcus Svensson whom received the second Olympic quota in a 4-3 shootout after a 14-14 tie in the final.

Italy continues to show its strength in shotgun events by winning its second gold in the men’s double trap by defeating Fernando Enrique Brol of Guatemala in a score of 29-27. Since Italy has already secured its maximum quota for this event the second Olympic spot went to third place Pan Qiang of China whom defeated Great Britain’s Steven Scott.

Despite 3/6 semi-finalists in the women’s trap already booking a spot to the Olympics the two spots went to the finalists as both Finland’s 2008 Olympic champion Satu Makela-Nummela and Russia’s Tatiana Barsuk both reached the final with a score of 13. Makela-Nummela won the event with a score of 13-12

For the medal matches in the men’s trap we had two previously qualified athletes as both David Kostelecky from the Czech Republic and Croatia’s Josip Glasnovic reached the gold and bronze finals respectively. They both ended up winning their matches as Kostelecky defeated Turkey’s Yavuz Ilnam 13-12 and Glasnovis defeated Finland’s Vesa Tornroos 15-10.

While there is one more world cup event along with the world shotgun championships remaining both Europe and Pan America will have their continental qualifiers before those events. Europe will still have a plethora of viable athletes; however, the Pan American Games will do a good job removing viable athletes from the world pool, most notable athletes from the United States.

Quotas by Nation

  • China – 2
  • Finland – 2
  • Guatemala – 1
  • Russia – 1
  • Sweden – 1
  • Thailand – 1
  • Turkey – 1
  • United Arab Emirates – 1
