The Pan American Games continue with triathlon where Chile and Mexico both won gold medals. The triathlon events are a continental Olympic qualifier where the top nation from the men’s and women’s race qualifies a spot. The Pan America Games are currently being held in Toronto, Canada from July 7th to July 26th 2015. The triathlon events were held from July 11th to July 12th 2015.
In the women’s race the swimming portion was led by three people with Bermuda’s Flora Duffy leading the way with a time of 18:35. Things became interesting in the cycling portion as the chase group was able to catch up to the lead group and as Flora Duffy crossed the transition line the top 17 competitors were separated by just 9 seconds. At this point it was Chile’s Barbara Riveros that decided to take the lead in the race where she ended up winning with a time of 1:57:18. Mexico’s Paola Diaz won silver with a time of 1:57:48 while bronze went to Flora Duffy of Bermuda with a time of 1:57:56.
There was no sprint swim in the men’s race as the majority of the competitors stayed within striking distance of the lead. It was Mexico’s Irving Perez who emerged from the water in the lead, but any lead he had was quickly eaten up during the cycling portion. While there were different packs initially eventually all the cyclists merged to form one large 26 person pack where it became apparent that the race will come down to a run. Entering the last lap of the running portion it became known that the three medalists will be United States’ Kevin McDowell, Mexico’s Cristiano Grajales and Irving Perez. Towards the end Perez fell off pace and would eventually take bronze. It became a sprint between McDowell and Grajales for the gold. Grajales was able to out-sprint McDowell and win by one second with a time of 1:48:58.
For the other nations the only other way to qualify will be through the Triathlon Olympic Rankings. As a continent Pan America is quite decent in the sport so I expect many athletes from this region to eventually qualify.
