Argentina finished as the top nation at the 2016 Women’s Volleyball South American Qualification Tournament. The five team tournament was held in a round robin format where the highest ranked team secured a spot to the Olympics. The Women’s Volleyball South American Qualification Tournament was held in Bariloche, Argentina from January 6th to January 10th 2015.
The first match of the tournament between Colombia and Venezuela went to a fifth set after the two nations split the four sets. The match would essentially be a dead lock until the end where Colombia secured the two point gap to win the final set 17-15. With Brazil already qualified to the Olympics as hosts the fight came down between Argentina and Peru as they would both won their first three matches by a combined set total of 9-1 and 9-0 respectively.
On the final day Argentina secured its spot to the Olympics by defeating Peru is straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-14). Colombia would go and secure third place with a 3-1 win over Chile.
This will be Argentina’s debut in women’s volleyball and this is also the ninth team sport Argentina has qualified so far. It is likely that Argentina may qualify its highest amount of athletes to the Olympics. Peru will get a final chance to qualify at the World Qualification Tournament while Colombia will get a second chance to qualify at the Intercontinental Qualification Tournament.
