Volleyball: Cuba Wins Men’s NORCECA Qualifier

Cuba was able to go undefeated at the 2016 Men’s Volleyball NORCECA Qualification Tournament. The four team tournament was held in a round robin format where the highest ranked team secured a spot to the Olympics. The Men’s Volleyball NORCECA Qualification Tournament was held in Edmonton, Canada from January 8th to January 10th 2015.

With the United States already qualified through its performance at the World Cup the favourites for this tournament became Canada and Cuba. Both nations were able to sweep their first two matches against Mexico and Puerto Rico with similar scores setting up a clash for the Olympic quota between the two nations.

Cuba was able to win the final match and qualify to the Olympics by defeating Canada in a 3-0 sweep. Mexico grabbed third place by coming back 2-0 against Puerto Rico to win the match 3-2.

This will be Cuba’s first men’s team in volleyball since the 2000 Olympics. Canada will get a second chance at qualifying at the World Qualification Tournament while Mexico will get its chance at the Intercontinental Qualification Tournament.
